Most and Least Expensive Cars to Insure

Ten autos that will sap your wallet

From seeking greater fuel efficiency to carpooling, some American drivers are looking for ways to save on ownership costs.

But one thing most can't do without is car insurance. Each of the nation's 50 states has laws that require drivers purchase liability insurance or provide enough "proof of financial responsibility" to cover a claim in case of an accident.

Premiums are ropping; the average in May was at its lowest point in a year at $1,871 per car, down from the national average of $1,982 in October, according to RateWatch, a Web site that tracks annual average insurance rates. But they continue, for most, to be a major outlay. Still, consumers worried about the bottom line have options.

The 185-horsepower, 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe costs an average of $832 a year to insure, the lowest of a list of just under 300 2009 models surveyed. The Saturn Vue costs an average of $911 a year to insure, and a Kia Sedona can be covered for an annual cost of $857.

Owners of luxury autos such as the BMW M5, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Porsche 911 pay for that kind of prestige -- $2,020, $2,088 and $1,819, respectively. But those who drive the $80,790 Nissan GT-R, the 2009 Motor Trend Car of the Year, pay an average $2,533 a year. The sports car's super-charged 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged 24-valve V6 engine helped it to the top of the list.

Behind the Numbers

Our numbers come from Insure.com, an online information clearinghouse for consumers. The company calculated nationwide average car insurance premiums for almost 300 2009 model-year vehicles. Averages are based on a 40-year-old male driver who commutes 12 miles to work. This driver has policy limits of $100,000 for injury liability for one person; $300,000 for all injuries and $50,000 for property damage in an accident; and a $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive. This policy also includes uninsured motorist coverage. Rates were averaged across multiple ZIP codes and insurance companies.

Of course, a car's value will jack up a driver's outlay, as will the driving record of the person behind the wheel, says Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and market analyst for Kelley Blue Book.

Other factors can play a part too, such as potential loss. For example, the Hummer H2 was the eighth-most stolen car in America, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which determined its list by claims per 1,000 divided by average loss payment per claim; it is also eighth-most expensive vehicle to insure on our list.

A consumer's ability to compare is another factor. Shoppers may be most familiar with big companies with representatives located nationwide. Comparing the rates at these brand names with those found online and at independent agencies will yield the best deals. Make sure to compare limits and features side by side.

Driver stereotypes also play a role. Expensive, high-performance autos often attract "riskier" drivers, says Nerad, and such vehicles are more expensive to fix or replace when involved in accidents. Likewise, autos like sports cars that are popular with younger drivers usually have a higher premium since younger drivers are considered riskier drivers.

Larger vehicles like SUVs and minivans are more likely to be family vehicles driven by mothers, who are historically less dangerous drivers. With lower risk comes lower loss potential, and thus a lower premium. Eight of the top 10 least expensive vehicles to insure are either minivans or SUVs.

But even those with a need for speed are likely to see premiums drop slightly. And, along with premiums, insurance rates have fallen after an increase last year of 8%. Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah and Idaho experienced the largest rate decreases in May, from 9% in Wyoming to 5.5% in Idaho.

As insurers compete for increasingly discerning consumers, expect this downward trend to continue for the rest of this year.

Related readings: Milestones in China's insurance sector Pacific Insurance reports Q3 loss on investment No assurance of successAs of September 30, China's premium income growth was about 50 percent, while accident insurance only grew 7.8 percent. The slow growth of accident insurance has prompted insurance companies to develop the Internet as a new platform to rev up sales.
So far, PICC, China Pacific, China United, Taikang, AIA, Taiping and Allianz China, among other insurers, have opened online channels for insurance policy purchases. Transportation, travel and personal life accident insurance products are all available online.
The Internet has become a popular channel of insurance sale, because it helps save costs, has no time and location restrictions on policy purchases, and also enables purchasers to enjoy online payment, discount, e-policy download, and other services.
Experts agree that people's insurance awareness often grows significantly after big natural disasters and thus results in an explosive growth in accident insurance and property insurance purchases. However, the frequent disasters in China this year, such as snow disasters, the earthquake and so on, did not lead to this expected growth.
Despite this, at such a time when the authorities order bancassurance products to be scaled back and refocus on guarantee, insurance companies will not easily give up accident insurance, which is one of the major guarantee-type products.
Accident insurance boasts comparatively high underwriting profits. Statistics from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission show that from January to September, accident insurance payouts were 4.55 billion yuan ($655.92 million), with a simple loss ratio at 28 percent only.
Dropping 0.6 percent in its payouts from a year earlier, accident insurance is the only insurance type that has witnessed a decrease, while the average growth rate of the nation’s insurance compensation and claims was as high as 35 percent.

Modern day Volvo P1800 envisaged by Koenigsegg engineer

turbocharged V8 sourced from Volvo’s XC90 SUV that has been dialled up to 600hp (448kW) Koenigsegg and Volvo may be worlds apart in terms of the cars they build, but the two companies do have one thing in common - engineer and petrol head Mattias Vöx. The Koenigsegg engineer shares a love for both marques, and his work with the Swedish supercar company has allowed him to take on some dream projects of his own, including a SEMA appearance in 2006 for his 1967 Volvo Amazon station wagon that was cranked up to 600hp (448kW).Vöx is now taking on a new challenge, this time with another Volvo to modify and mold into a formidable driving machine. Taking the famous P1800, one of Volvo's first sports cars, Vöx will be updating it to be a little more modern than the original 1960s version. To accomplish this, he has also enlisted the help of Swedish design firm Vizualtech, which has already created a number of computer generated renderings depicting the new custom car. While Vizualtech will preserve the general lines of the classic Volvo P1800, there will be some changes to accommodate the modern components Vöx plans to install. These include larger wheel housings and a 70mm extension to the front of the car. These changes should help when Vöx drops a new V8 engine sourced from Volvo’s XC90 SUV into the engine bay. Matched to a six-speed manual, the engine will also have a turbocharger fitted to dial up power levels to around the 600hp (448kW) mark. Other performance mods planned for the car include a rear-diffuser, a flat underside, and a slightly redesigned front-end to aid air flow. Construction is currently underway, and while there’s no date scheduled for an unveiling hopefully we'll be seeing it at a motoring event sometime soon.

About the Markets/Fairs
Call Harish on 0425 211 965. For those who have not been to a computer market before, a computer market is no different from any other market in that it is composed of stalls run by various vendors. Each vendor pays a small fee for the space he occupies and uses it to display and sell his goods. The sale that takes place is a transaction between the vendor and the customer and has nothing to do with the organizer of the market. The difference between other markets and computer markets is that in a computer market all stalls are involved in the selling of mainly computer gear. On sale are complete systems, hardware, software, accessories and peripherals, both second hand and new equipment. 95% of a person's computer requirement can be satisfied at a computer market. Also you will see virtually every brand of equipment. Walk into a shop and you will see only a fraction of what's on display at the computer markets we conduct.
Costs and Timings
For a small entry charge of only $3 you have the opportunity to shop in one venue with 25-50 different shops covering between 50-130 tables of goods all under the one roof. Entry times for the public is from 10 a.m. till 2.30 p.m.

The Global Information Technology Report 2008-2009
Published 26 March 2009
The Report stresses the importance of ICT as a catalyst for growth in the current global turmoil
Denmark and Sweden once again lead the rankings of The Global Information Technology Report 2008-2009, released for the eighth consecutive year by the World Economic Forum. The United States follows suit, up one position from last year, thus confirming its pre-eminence in networked readiness in the current times of economic slowdown. Singapore (4), Switzerland (5) and the other Nordic countries together with the Netherlands and Canada complete the top 10.
The Report underlines that good education fundamentals and high levels of technological readiness and innovation are essential engines of growth needed to overcome the current economic crisis. Under the theme “Mobility in a Networked World”, this year’s Report places a particular focus on the relationship and interrelations between mobility and ICT.
With record coverage of 134 economies worldwide, the Report remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.
The Report is produced by the World Economic Forum in cooperation with INSEAD, the leading international business school, and is sponsored by Cisco Systems.
Watch Video Interviews with the Report co-editors:
Jennifer Blanke, Director and Senior Economist, and Thierry Geiger, Economist and Global Leadership Fellow, at the World Economic Forum will answer your questions at Mogulus on Thursday 26 March at 17.00 CET

cost analysis

Cost analysis of a location management strategy with commonly visited sites in PCS networksArakawa, T.; Kawanishi, K.; Onozato, Y.; Deshpande, R.Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications, 2002. The 5th International Symposium onVolume 3, Issue , 27-30 Oct. 2002 Page(s): 1395 - 1399 vol.3Digital Object Identifier 10.1109/WPMC.2002.1088409Summary: We consider a location management scheme called limited pointer forwarding from commonly visited sites (LPC) in a PCS network. LPC aims to reduce significantly the cost of updating databases in the PCS network. The strategy exploits the fact that it is highly likely for mobile users to move within commonly visited sites (CVSs) (see Makki, S., Computer Commun., vol.23, p.975-9, 2000). We employ analytical models to compare the location management cost of the LPC scheme with existing schemes such as the basic HLR/VLR (home location register, visitor location register) in IS-41. We discuss the conditions under which LPC outperforms the other schemes.» View citation and abstract

Canada Affordability 2002
Canada Affordability 2005
Canada Affordability 2006
Canada Affordability 2008
Canada like many other industrial nations is in economic crisis. The government projects that in 2009 the economy will shrink by at least 7 pct. And yet, there are some good news coming from or related to the real estate market. The housing starts are again going up, and significantly. The housing affordability is also moving up, meaning more people have to spend less to become or to remain owners. The inflation is under control and the central bank promises to keep the main rates at their historic low levels. Let's be clear, the Canadian economy cannot overcome the crisis alone, given its high dependency on foreign trade. In other words, until the United States is in crisis (80 pct of the trade is with this country alone), Canada will be in crisis. Nevertheless, these recent numbers show that the crisis may be milder than south of the border.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts increased to 154,700 units in March from 136,100 units in February, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. There are more starts in the two key provinces, Ontario and Quebec, where almost two third of the entire population lives. There is, however, some decline in British Columbia, in Atlantic Canada, and in the Prairies. In the latter, the main reason is falling down energy prices.
There is some improved housing affordability, according to the latest housing report by the Royal Bank of Canada. The sharp deteriorating trend in RBC's affordability measures from mid-2004 to early 2008 has been reversed in the past year. Compared with a year earlier, RBC's measures improved 2.3 to 3.5 percentage points due primarily to lower lending rates. The housing affordability measures the proportion of pre-tax household income needed to service the costs of owning a home. The affordability for detached bungalow is now at 43.7 pct, the standard townhouse is at 35.4 pct, the standard condo is at 30.1 pct, and the standard two-story home is at 50 pct. The affordability measure for a detached bungalow for Canada's largest cities is as follows: Vancouver 70.3 pct, Toronto 51.3 pct, Calgary 42.7 pct, Ottawa 42.7 pct and Montreal 39.4 pct.
The Bank of Canada says it will keep the key-lending rate at its historic low level of .25 pct until June 2010, and if that doesn't help Canada survive the recession it will take less conventional measures like buying out governmental and corporate papers.

Slumdog won Oscar Awards of 2009

"Slumdog Millionaire" dominates Oscar award ceremony

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Amid great fanfare, the 81st Academy Awards ended Sunday night, with "Slumdog Millionaire" becoming the biggest winner grabbing eight honors.
The rags-to-riches love story film went into the ceremony with 10 nominations and walked away with eight honors including best picture, best director and best editing.

A.R. Rahman claimed two Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire," one for the original song "Jai Ho" and another for best original score.
The movie tells a story of two brothers growing up in the slums of India, with one finding love and the other finding a life of crime.
Chris Dickens, who won the Oscar for film editing for the movie, said he did not foresee the film's popularity.
"It wouldn't have even occurred to us," he said backstage at the Kodak Theatre where the award ceremony was held. "I'd never imagined that we'd have so many of us getting these awards."
The film, which struggled to find a distributor and almost went direct to home video, had already won a Golden Globe, a Producers Guild award, a Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble cast, a best director honor from the Directors Guild of America and a best adapted screenplay award from the Writers Guild of America.
Many of the film's young stars were flown to Hollywood to attend the Oscar ceremony, and they all walked onto the Kodak Theatre stage as producer Christian Colson accepted the statuette.
"Together we've been on an extraordinary, extraordinary journey. When we started out, we had no stars, we had no power or muscle, we didn't have enough money, really, to do what we wanted to do. But what we had was a script that inspired mad love in everybody that read it," he said.
"Most of all we had passion and we had belief and our film shows that if you have those two things, truly anything is possible," he said.
Top nominee "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" had 13 nominations, but won only three, for art direction, makeup and visual effects.
In addition to "Slumdog" and "Benjamin Button," the other best picture nominees were "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "The Reader."
Sean Penn won the best actor award for his role as slain San Francisco city supervisor and gay-rights activist Harvey Milk in "Milk" and Kate Winslet finally took home a statuette for best actress in "The Reader."
"You commie, homo-loving sons of guns," Penn, who won the prize for a second time, joked to the crowd as he accepted his award. "I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. But I am touched by the appreciation."
Penn previously won a best-actor statuette for his work in "Mystic River."
Winslet, who played a German trolley-car conductor who turns out to be a former Nazi guard in "The Reader," won the Oscar on her sixth nomination, avoiding going 0-for-6 and becoming the most-nominated Oscar loser.
"I'd be lying if I haven't made a version of this speech before I think I was probably eight years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would have been a shampoo bottle," Winslet said. "Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now. I feel very fortunate to have made it all the way from there to here."
She credited her fellow actors and crew members for making "The Reader" a top film.
"There was no division between the cast and the crew on this film and that's what made it so special, to have been surrounded by remarkable group of people who provided an unbroken chain of support," she said.
At 33, Winslet is the youngest actress to earn six Oscar nominations. The record was previously held by actress Bette Davis, who was 34 when she received her sixth nomination for "Now, Voyager" in 1942.
The late Heath Ledger won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," while Penelope Cruz was named best supporting actress for her steamy performance in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription medication on Jan. 22, 2008, had already posthumously won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for his role as the mentally tortured Joker in the Batman sequel.
Ledger's father Kim, mother Sally and sister Kate accepted the award on his behalf, and they received a standing ovation as they walked to the Kodak Theatre stage.
"This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers, within an industry he so loved," Kim Ledger said.
Cruz was named best supporting actress for her role as Maria Elena in the Woody Allen film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." She was nominated for best actress in 2007 for "Volver," but this was her first win.
"Has anybody ever fainted here? I might be the first one," Cruz said as she accepted the award. She thanked Allen for "trusting me with this beautiful character."
"Thank you for having written over all these years some of the greatest characters for women," she said.
Cruz said she would always watch the Oscar ceremony while growing up in Spain.
"And always the night of the Academy Awards, I stay up to watch the show and I always felt that this ceremony was a moment of unity for the world because art, in any form, is and has been and will always be our universal language and we should do everything we can ... to protect its survival," she said.
